Premium Shellfish Seed

SEED FIRST

Hatchery Operations

Spawning and early growth of our shellfish larvae takes place at our Point Whitney hatchery in Brinnon, Washington and in Kona, Hawaii. Our oyster and geoduck clam seed is nurtured by algae grown on site, and bathed in constantly flowing cold, clean sea water.

The FLUPSY Process

When the seed is a little larger, it is transferred from our hatcheries to our FLUPSY in John Wayne Marina in Sequim, Washington.

(A FLUPSY is a floating nursery or floating upweller system with several bins that hold seed of different sizes, and a large paddle wheel run by an electric motor that draws water into the unit and pulls it up through each bin, simulating tidal action). From this point on, the sea feeds the oysters.

Seed First

From here, the seed continues to grow until it is the right size to be sold to other commercial farmers or to be planted on our beaches. Our model and motto is “Seed First”. Since we bring only a small percentage of our own seed products to the adult market, our business is quite literally your business. Supplying your farms with high quality seed and excellent service is our first and foremost goal.

Customer Relationships

The vibrant shellfish growers’ community is endlessly diverse in method and scope, and Jamestown is always eager to learn more about your specific needs. We happily invite customer conversations, both casual and technical, with our hatchery management because the more we know about each other, the better we can serve. Regardless of whether you are mom-and-pop grower, or a major producer, we have time for you.
